What was iFriends?
iFriends was a webcam community that launched on Valentine’s Day 1998, years before most of today’s cam sites existed. Members could watch performers broadcasting live, chat in their rooms and pay for private shows. It also offered VIP memberships and fan clubs, letting regulars subscribe to favourite models for extra content and perks, a model that many later sites copied.
How did iFriends work?
- Visitors browsed live broadcasters and their profiles.
- Members joined free chat in a performer’s room.
- Paying members bought time for private one-on-one shows.
- Fans could join a performer’s fan club or buy a VIP membership for extra perks.
- Performers earned from private shows, fan clubs and memberships.
Timeline: from launch to closure
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| February 14, 1998 | iFriends.net launches as one of the first large webcam communities |
| 2000s | It grows into a well-known destination for live cams, with VIP memberships and model fan clubs |
| 2010s | Free-to-watch token sites grow quickly, and industry coverage notes iFriends’ traffic declining |
| October 17, 2018 | iFriends closes and replaces its homepage with a farewell message |
| After closure | Recent VIP and fan club payers are promised refunds; performers move to other sites |
Why did iFriends shut down?
iFriends’ own farewell notice gave three reasons: the end of US net neutrality rules, new legislation and costly patent litigation. In practice the market had also moved on. Sites where public shows are free and viewers tip with tokens had grown fast, and coverage at the time noted that iFriends’ traffic had been falling. Its older membership-style model struggled to compete.
What happened to iFriends members and models?
Members who had paid for VIP or fan club memberships in the 30 days before closure were promised refunds. Performers moved to other platforms, many posting their new homes on their old profiles before the site went dark. Today, many cam models who once used iFriends broadcast on veteran sites such as Flirt4Free or on token sites like Chaturbate.

Staying safe when replacing iFriends
The biggest risk for former iFriends users is look-alike sites. Because the brand was well known, other sites have used similar names to attract old members, so treat anything calling itself iFriends with suspicion.
- Don’t trust sites using the iFriends name. The original closed in 2018.
- Stick to established cam sites with clear pricing and a long track record.
- Use a unique password and an email you don’t use for banking or work.
- Set a spending limit before buying credits or tokens.
- 18+ only. Adult cam sites are strictly for adults.
